It might not be quite the Thousand-Year Door revival that hardcore fans were looking for, but there's something rather special about Paper Mario: The Origami King. Not only does it channel that fun, light-hearted, and often rather cheeky vibe that the Paper Mario series is famed for, but it also feels like a celebration of Super Mario lore as a whole - from the characters to the worlds that it brings to life.
Of course, there are new characters and mechanics to explore and get to know too, including your new sidekick Olivia, and a brand new ring-based battle system that requires more strategy than Paper Mario titles have before. It's a fantastic game that is stuffed full of secrets of collectables too, meaning you get plenty of adventure for your time investment.

This year we finally got to return to Midgar, and it was glorious. Sure, any game surrounded by this much hype was bound to have criticism heaped on it, but the remake is a masterful re-imagining of the title that redefined what an RPG could be. Final Fantasy VII Remake introduced an engaging style of action RPG, both melding the party balancing system from traditional RPGs with more fluid, flashy combat, and overturning the turned-based system. By no means does the FF7 remake replace the original. It instead does something even better: It creates what feels like a truly new experience.

With the dust settled, it's fair to say that The Last of Us 2 underwent one of the most turbulent releases in PlayStation history, with pandemic-related delays, devastating plot leaks, and some truly virulent online discourse surrounding its launch. But fret not, the old consoles are going out with a bang in terms of new games. This year has been stacked with titles spanning all audiences, from plenty of action RPGs and first-person shooters, to some insanely narrative-driven games, to some equally artful and wacky indie projects. A new Animal Crossing (!!) and a sequel to The Last of Us have proven that you can always rely on impressive triple-A outtings. Same goes for the always-innovative indie community, with a gem like Moving Out blessing our consoles.
